Strengthening Vaccine Protection in Africa

A crucial Africa Day Satellite Meeting spotlighted initiatives aimed at strengthening vaccine protection in Africa, for Africa. The discussions underscored the importance of regional partnerships, sustainable vaccine manufacturing, and collaboration between vaccine developers and NGOs in building health security across the continent. The event reinforced ISV’s mission to connect stakeholders and drive progress in local vaccine innovation.

Dr. Nicaise Ndembi, Deputy Director General of IVI and IARO Regional Director, emphasized that coordination and collaboration are key to achieving a “whole-of-Africa” approach.

Dr. Michael Lusiola, Director of RVMC, shared a striking fact: Africa currently imports over 99% of its vaccines, while the African Union has set a target to locally produce 60% of vaccines by 2040.
